Get your name in the frame for the 2016 Olympics. Broadstreet Rugby Club tonight 26th April 2010 take part in the Coventry Benevolent Sevens tournement. The games kick off from 6:30 pm this evening at Old Coventrians RFC. The tournement is run in support of the charity which helps injured players and their families in financial difficulty with all District Union clubs requested to enter sides to raise as much money for the charity as possible.
Rugby sevens, also known as seven-a-side and VIIs, is a form of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players, instead of the usual 15, with matches played 7 minutes per half (10 Minutes for finals). The games are played on full sized rugby pitches creating much more space for faster open running. Scrums consist of 3 players, 2 props and a hooker with four backs including scrum half and fly half.
Sevens tournaments are a great viewing spectacle, tough on players and squad rotation allows for greater rest periods in between games. The tournaments are normally played all on one day / night, or over a weekend dependant upon the numbers of teams competing and can be great social events.
Annual sevens tournaments are held for Warwickshire, Coventry and district, and 'The Earlsdon Sevens', nationally Bournemouth RFC run a weekend with plenty of social activities to keep players and fans occupied with international players and guest DJ’s to add to the masses.
There are many sevens tournaments which have a competition for a cup, a plate, a bowl, and a shield, allowing many teams of different standards to avoid leaving empty handed.
