Skene Roars 'Bring On The Lions'
BROADSTREET player coach Ed Simkiss has his fingers crossed for a showdown with local rivals Rugby Lions after they were potentially paired together in the EDF Energy National Trophy fourth round.
The mouth-watering derby, scheduled for January 17, is dependent on Rugby beating Bridgwater & Albion in their delayed third round encounter.
Yesterday, Midlands One side Broadstreet were rewarded for their 11-10 third round victory over Westloe on Saturday with a home tie against the winner of all-National League Three South clash.
And, despite being a league lower than their rivals, Simkiss was delighted with Broadstreet’s draw.
“It’s a fantastic draw for us and all of us at Broadstreet are praying that Rugby can hold off the challenge of Bridgwater,” he said. “If they do, then we’ve got a great cup tie on our hands.
“It’ll be a tough game, for sure, but despite being underdogs we’ll give it everything we’ve got to upset the odds.
“We’re at home, and that could give us the edge we need to cause a shock.”
Broadstreet’s chairman, Richard Skene, agreed with Simkiss.
“First and foremost, we’re delighted with a home draw, and secondly, we are ecstatic to be potentially paired with Rugby,” he said. “When you look at the draw, it’s plain to see there aren’t many clubs in the Midlands, and it feels as if both us and the Lions are flying the flag for the area.”
