Street Snare A Lion.
Broadstreet recruit hoping to use his cunning and trickery to outfox the opposition in National 3 Midlands.
Broadstreet RFC have captured Rugby Lions RFC outside-back Ian Renard, a 24 year old Wing or Full back. Ian is a native of Rugby town and played all of his rugby through to Colts for the Lions where he earned representative honours for Warwickshire at numerous age groups. After school he left Rugby and headed off to Worcester University to study Sport Science, where he represented the 1st XV in the BUCS Championship.
After finishing university, Ian secured a job in Harrogate working for Opta Sports, where he provides stats for Premiership rugby clubs and Sky TV. It was there that he gained his first taste of National League rugby playing for local side Harrogate RFC in National 2 North. Whilst working for Opta his accurate analysis resulted in him being selected to provide match stats for the World Cup in France on behalf of the IRB. After moving back home to become the Rugby Coach at Moulton College in Northampton, Ian had an unusual season last year, being a bit part player for two Midlands sides as they struggled for survival in National 2.
Starting the season at Rugby Lions Ian struggled to maintain a starting place due to the constant influx of outside players being “brought in” to make the Lions more competitive in the league. So, stuck behind the likes of Coventry RFC’s Kurt Johnson, Steve Clarke, Gareth Clarke, Reuben Haile and former Broadstreet player Andy McGrory, Ian went on loan to Hinckley RFC in order to gain more game time. However, he was not there long before he was being called back to play for his boy-hood team as those that had previously kept him out became injured or, in some cases, jumped ship. He unfortunately suffered relegation with them and was gutted not to be given a better opportunity to help them stay up.
Ian is also a very keen 7s player, representing the county as well as creating his very own 7s team ‘Trojans 7s’ where he is a player/coach. He is keen to bring his enthusiasm for all aspects of the game to Broadstreet. Ian said "I am really excited to be joining a club with great ambition and looking forward to the challenge of performing well, week in week out in National Three”
This particular Renard doesn't have a distinctive white muzzle and bushy tail, but let's hope he's just as sly and fleet-footed.
