A match between two local rivals is always bound to throw up the odd talking point and this game was no exception. Firstly, Kenilworth RFC were reduced to 14 men in the second half as prop Tristan Wati was sent from the field for allegedly stamping on fly half Dan Richards’s face. Then Kenilworth’s skipper was forced to leave the field with a leg injury taking the game into uncontested scrums for the third time with the score standing at 22-10.
The game itself was played at a good pace with both sides enjoying some good passages of play. Broadstreet RFC opened the scoring on 7 minutes when Full back Andy Mcgrory burst through the defence after an excellent passing move to score with an enthusiastic dive out wide on the right.
The try went unconverted. Broadstreet with their tails up started to mount further attacks and spent much of the next 10 minutes in Kenilworth half resulting in a penalty on 18 minutes slotted over by Dan Richards.8-0.
Kenilworth were further hindered as blindside flanker Stu Eborall was sent to the bin for 10 minutes for coming in from the wrong side. Then came a bizarre try on 25 minutes when Kenilworth under pressure in a scrum on their own line watched in dismay as the number 8 flicked the ball from between his legs towards his scrum half the ball was readily intercepted by street’s scrum half Nick Thatcher and with the easy job of putting the ball down behind the line. Richards converted the try to make the score 15-0.
Kenilworth picked up the pace and started to move the ball from deep in there half and were halted in the street 22 when Mcgrory was judged to have obstructed the wing in the chase for the ball. He was sent to the bin for 10 minutes. The resulting pressure applied by Kenilworth was repelled with some excellent last-ditch defence who managed to keep them out until half time. 15-0
The second half started much as the first half had ended with Kenilworth making a break only for the final pass to be intercepted by Simpson who intern moved the ball to Richards and then the final pass to Morris put him in open space for a 40 meter clear run to the line. Richards added the conversion. 22-0.
Much of the next 15 minutes was Kenilworths best phase of play. They had picked up the pace and put street under some pressure and were rewarded with a try by Francis Nock. Ryan Tomlinson added the conversion. 22-7. Tomlinson then added a further penalty a few minutes later. 22-10.
Then came the incident that that changed the game. Wati was sent from the field for stamping on Richards and then a few minutes later the Kenilworth skipper left the
field with a leg injury. This making the game go to uncontested scrums.
Broadstreet finished the game off in a flurry with an excellent move resulting in centre Lindsey Bishop scoring under the posts to be converted by Richards making the final score 29-10.
This has since been reduced to 22-10 between the two clubs, as this was the score when the game went to uncontested scrums.
