Term Definition
Barbarians

Many years ago, a group of players were chosen to form an elite team. These players had no ground, no clubhouse or subscription and membership was by invitation only. The idea of this elite team was to spread good fellowship amongst all rugby football players. It became of feature of the great touring sides of the southern hemisphere would play against the Barbarians on the last game of their tour playing to sell out crowds allowing the touring sides to take part in 'the final challenge'

Broad Street School

Broad Street school was the original school in Foleshill, Coventry from which the originators of Broad Street Old Boys Rugby Club attended. The club later dropped the old boys title and joined the Broad and Street together to form Broadstreet RFC

Broadstreet Rugby Football Club

Broadstreet RFC currently play their rugby in the National League 2 North League which is currently Level 4 of the English RFU structure. The Club play their home games at the Ivor Preece Field, in Binley Woods, Coventry.

Coventry

Coventry is the 9th largest city in the England is situated 95 miles NW of London and 19 miles E of Birmingham. Coventry is the location of Broadstreet Rugby Club and the city has a population of just over 300 000.

Coventry and District

Coventry & Mid Warwickshire district union embraces 19 clubs including the two university teams and Coventry Police RFC. The district union run under-17, under-19 and senior teams playing against South Warwickshire, Rugby & District and Nuneaton & North while Coventry rugby club sides compete in a 2nd XV cup and sevens competition to raise money for injured players.

Ivor Preece

Ivor Preece (15 December 1920 - 14 March 1987) attended Broad Street school, Foleshill playing Fly Half for Broad Street Old Boys, Coventry Rugby Club, England and the British and Irish Lions. He is the only Coventry Rugby Club player to have captain Club and Country both at schoolboy and senior level . He was selected to play with the British and Irish Lions, on their tour to New Zealand and Australia in 1950.

Lee Crofts

Lee is the current Broadstreet Rugby Club Head Coach. A Former Number 8 Lee regularly played for Coventry Police until his rugby career took him from Broadstreet RFC to Captain Coventry RFC where he made 247 appearances. Lee played for Rugby Lions RFC, Stourbridge RFC , British Police and the Barbarians.

Maul

A maul occurs when a player carrying the ball is held by one or more opponents, and one or more of the ball carrier's team mates bind on the ball carrier. Once a maul has formed other players may join in but, as in a ruck, they must do so from their own side.

Mini Rugby

Mini rugby is a version of the senior game played by children from the age of six years old to 12 years old, where each stage brings in additional skills for the development of the child. Each stage has its own rules distinguishing it from the adult game of rugby. The stages are structured to introduce different aspects of the game matched to the development ability of the childs age group. The emphasis being to develop these skills all within the 'Spirit Of Rugby'

National League 2 North

The National League 2 North league is a league at level 4 in the English RFU structure having been promoted there as champions of Midlands 1 during the 2008 -2009 season. The league compromises of teams promoted from both the Northern and Midlands teams and feeds Level 3 National League 1

NCA

The NCA (National Clubs Association) is the organisation of the 48 clubs playing in the National Leagues 1 and 2 of the English Clubs Rugby Union Championship.

Penalty

a penalty is the main disciplinary sanction available to the referee to penalise players who commit deliberate infringements. The team who did not commit the infringement are given possession of the ball and may either kick it towards touch, attempt a place kick at goal, or tap the ball with their foot and run it. It is also sometimes used as shorthand for penalty goal.

RFU

The RFU (Rugby Football Union) is the national governing body for grassroots and elite rugby in England, with 1,900 rugby clubs in its membership. The clubs are grouped within 35 different bodies with Broadstreet RFC affiliated to the Warwickshire RFU

Ruck

A ruck is formed when at least one player from each side bind onto each other with the ball on the ground between them. Additional players can join the ruck but must do so from behind the hindmost foot of a teammate in the ruck. Players must also be on their feet to join the ruck, and must bind onto the ruck with their whole arm around the body of a team mate. In a ruck, no player may use their hands to win the ball. Each side attempts to drive the other side back, and players use their feet to hook the ball back towards their own side — an action known as rucking the ball.

Rugby Union

Rugby union is the version of Rugby Football played with 15 players on each side. The game includes lineouts rucks and mauls in its features. Its a full contact team sport which is a version of football originating from England in the early 19th century. The game is played with an oval shaped ball outdoors usually on a level grass playing field. Each end of the pitch features a H shaped goal.
