The Game Must Go On... 2012-09-30T18:30:00+00:00 2012-09-30T18:30:00+00:00 http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk/broadstreet-4ths-versus-rugby-st-andrews-away-sep-12.html

Observing The Preponderance Of Vennards On Display, It’s Fairly Obvious Who’s Not Getting To Eat All The Pies.

Badgers RoundIt's always nice to arrive at an away fixture to be greeted by the words "we've only got eleven and no referee, best we call it off".  Fortunately, some gentle negotiation, persuasion and downright lying encouraged Rugby St. Andrews RFC IIIs to take the field against the mighty, well we did have sixteen Broadstreet IVs, the Badgers.  Having told them we had fourteen and would supply a ref out of that we had a game.  Realising they might spot we actually had fifteen as we took the field, we loaned them a very sporting Joe Dimarco and feeling suitably strengthened Rugby St Andrews began to warm up writes John Warne.

A lively contest, the extra room available on the pitch encouraged a free flowing game of end-to-end rugby - far too much for the majority of the senior players on display.   Dave Winterburn was a live wire at Scrum Half, chirping away all game like a Minor bird with Torrets - he harassed both his own team and the opposition alike, taking control and acting as the conduit to the free flowing Backs.

The Badgers were suitably honoured by the presence of celebrities in the form of the '90s pop duo PJ and Duncan.  Appearing smaller in real life, they both made a real impact on the game and certainly several of the opposition appeared star struck.

Ben Dalton and Will Vennard both volunteered to combine with stalwart Dean Pointon to make up the Front Row and did admirably.  The venerable father Bill Vennard was in the Second Row with Will 'Danny' Boyle, supported by Craig ‘Fozzy’ Foster and Simon Skene in the Back Row.  Together this Pack of seven held the might of the considerably heavier, if one man fewer, Rugby St Andrews Pack.

Early in the first half, Fozzy's groin finally wore out and he was only able to partake of the game as it approached him, but still the boys did good.  Some nice interchange play, some good off the ball running as well as a good amount of rucking and mauling saw 'Street reach half time comfortably ahead.

Changing Dimarco for Boyle saw a resurgence in the Rugby St Andrews performance, and a drop off of the 'Street's intensity and focus.  Fortunately, for the Badgers the 'Street's youth policy does not filter this far down and we were able to fall back on the experience of Gaz 'Mr Eternal Youth' Watts and Steve ‘Stay Strong’ Allen to steady the ship.  A shining example of how to slow the game down was exhibited allowing ‘Street to reclaim some initiative and finish off the challenge of Rugby St Andrews.

Andy Vennard played a fine game at Full Back, kicking numerous goals and looking far too young for this side.  Making up a triumvirate of Vennards, some questions must surely be asked in this house of who dishes out the portions because Andy is clearly not getting his fair share...

Tribute to Dave Cummins who volunteered to ref the game,  without whom none of these joys would have been possible.  Well done Cumbo.

Street Raise The Bar With A Half Century. 2012-09-30T12:00:00+00:00 2012-09-30T12:00:00+00:00 http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk/broadstreet-versus-bournville-home-sep-12.html

Passive Bournville Bettered in Second Half Bounty.

Broadstreet’s five second half Tries saw off Bournville RFC as the hosts reached the break with a five point advantage in an error strewn first forty minutes writes Bob Harcourt

broadstreet logo_300Against a stiff breeze at the Ivor Preece Field Ground, the home side held sway with three Tries to two in an end-to-end half. Nippy Nick Allsop added to his previous week’s Hat Trick with the opener after just two minutes following midfield progress by Allan Purchase and ‘everywhere’ Mike Rust.  Fly Half Danny Richards converted.  Despite territorial advantage, ‘Street conceded territory time and again into their half through Penalties and an extra 10 metres for ‘chopsing’ gave Bournville their first chance of points, which their kicker failed to take.

‘Street attacked after the miss, gaining a Penalty in front of the visitor’s posts. Captain Nick Thatcher opted to run and after the Forwards were held up over the line, they lost the resulting Scrum and Bournville cleared.  Again ‘Street went on the offensive, but a spilled ball let Bournville into the home half and another Ruck offence gave them a second shot at goal, also missed. From the drop out Street kicked short against the wind and although retaining possession the kick out of defence was run back by Bournville Full Back Eatough to score the softest of touch downs under the posts on the 26 minute mark. 7 – 7

The visitors increased their lead to 7 – 14 when they drove a Penalty Lineout and added the extras. Another four minutes and ‘Street drew level as Bournville failed to secure ball at a defensive Lineout. Flanker Chris Zutic pounced on the tap back to dive over. Richards obliged with two more points from wide. 14 – 14.  With the break approaching, the hosts Pack drove a Penalty Lineout and when halted short, spun the ball wide for Centre Adam Walsh to glide in out wide. Richards missed the Conversion.

Through injury, Yellow Card and dismissal, Bournville brought about uncontested Scrums just before the interval taking the edge out of the Scrum contest, where Paul Hurst, Paul Wilkes and Ben Dawes, soundly assisted by Rob Walton and Allan Purchase, were giving a good account of themselves against a heavier Bournville Pack.

HT: Broadstreet 19 - 14 Bournville.

Minutes after the resumption ‘Street notched up a Forward’s Try from a Lineout drive, claimed by Number Seven, Beau Carney, with two points added by Danny Richards, 26 – 14.  They were shortly after, called back for a forward pass in a scintillating forty metre passage of play involving several Forwards and notably Pete Bicknell and Nick Allsop in the Backs.  On the sixty minute mark replacement Flanker Rory Prentice finished off a similar passage, involving Purchase, Richards, Allsop and Todd Freemantle with trusty kicker Richards adding two points. 33 – 14

‘Street could have shut up shop for the final quarter, but on a lovely sunny day and with a sizeable crowd in attendance, the players were in the running mood and as legs tired on both sides from the pace, play became fractious and Tries alternated as a result.   Bournville crossed first after a long spell of pressure (33 – 21), then Adam Walsh again for the hosts (40 – 21); Bournville next (40 – 26) and Adam Preece joining the fray on the wing, for ‘Street. 47 – 26.  Good work by Flanker Beau Carney who, together with Back Row colleagues Gareth Turner and Chris Zutic featured throughout, put away the ever elusive Mike Rust (54 – 26) before Bournville Full Back Eatough grabbed a second soft run-in from distance in time added on. Richards converted all four for the home side with Bournville successful in two out of three.  ‘Street replacement Prop Mark Warrilow nearly opened his account late on with a burst through but he was denied by a knock-on. Next time Mark!

Final Score: Broadstreet 54 - 33 Bournville.

A sound win for ‘Street, displaying some fine passages of team play resulting in eight well taken Tries is something to savour, but it’s fair to say that the players were far from happy with their error count and, at times, some careless defence.

Much too early for laurels, but a much better feeling than weeks two and three gentlemen!?

To The Missing Generations Of Former Players – Get Involved! 2012-09-24T16:45:00+00:00 2012-09-24T16:45:00+00:00 http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk/to-the-missing-generations-of-former-players-get-involved.html

Get Involved!

Former-Players

We have decided it’s about time for us to seek out the missing generations of former players who, in the mists of time or in the not too distant past, packed their kit bag for the final time thereafter to be rarely seen or never seen at the Club again.

We have some dedicated former players who devote a great deal of their time and energy assisting with the development of Minis, Juniors, Colts and young Seniors in the art of playing this wonderful game of rugby.  Some also help with the day-to-day running of the Club.  But, there are many of you out there that we would love to see returning to the Club, to use your rugby knowledge, your personal skills and your life experience to help to make the club run even better than it does today.  We want to see you back at the club to participate more fully in consolidating the club and maybe later even moving it to a higher plain.

We need your support in all manner of things. Get Involved! by joining our Executive 60 Club.  No, that’s not the age you need to be, to join.  That’s the number of members we’re aiming for.  For a tenner a month you could be included in the twice yearly Prize Draw, currently with a first prize of £1,000. Get Involved! by using your influence to attract more sponsorship. Get Involved! in the running of the club by putting yourself forward to be a Committee Member with a few (or a portfolio of) responsibilities – your choice. Get Involved! by volunteering to be our Press Officer. Get Involved! by simply coming along for a few hours, as and when you can, to help maintain the Clubhouse exterior and grounds. Get Involved! by using your inter-personal and administrative skills to assist with communication within the club or team administration. Get Involved! by assisting with the organisation of our Car Boot Sales on Sundays. Get Involved! by deploying your practical expertise such as maintenance, electrical and plumbing skills as we always have the need for them.  In fact all the skills, time and effort that generations of former players, before yours, expended to ensure that your time as a player was so enjoyable.

Even if you can’t put yourself forward for any of the above, at the very least, we want you in the clubhouse on Saturdays to enjoy a few beers while adding to the already great atmosphere.

We’re not asking for too much. Don’t Disappear! Get involved!

Volunteers’ Day - Saturday 29th September 2012. 2012-09-24T15:45:00+00:00 2012-09-24T15:45:00+00:00 http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk/volunteers-day-saturday-29th-september-2012.html This Saturday morning from 9:30 am onwards.  Not necessarily from 9:30 am on the dot, but whenever you can make it, even if it’s mid-morning.

volunteers-dayWe are looking for adult volunteers to come along to the club to spend a few hours helping to maintain the wonderful facilities that we have at the Ivor Preece Field Club in Rugby Road, Binley Woods.  Nothing too onerous or too physical.  Just helping to keep the place spick and span.

We will finish at 1:30 pm for a complimentary buffet and a beer (or two) and you will have free admission to watch Street’s First Team play its first ever League match against Bournville RFC of Birmingham.

We will provide gloves and the appropriate tools for the jobs, together with any training necessary for the task.  It might be sweeping or jet washing or weeding or any one of the myriad of things that need doing to preserve what we have.  Your input will be invaluable and be very much appreciated, as we always need extra pairs of hands to keep the grounds as pristine as inside the Club.

Don’t hesitate to contact Steve Walton for further information.  As Steve is working on the night shift this week, it would be ideal if you could contact him by : -

Allsop Nicks Hat Trick As ‘Street Steady Ship. 2012-09-24T15:00:00+00:00 2012-09-24T15:00:00+00:00 http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk/allsop-nicks-hat-trick-as-steet-steady-ship.html

Street Shock Hinckley with Second Half Performance.

Broadstreet-Logo-SBroadstreet’s own ‘Billy Whiz’, Nick Allsop, scored a fine trio of Tries to help take a share of valuable points at Hinckley RFC’s splendid new set-up, neighbouring their former abode writes Bob Harcourt

A gutsy and skilful Second Half fight back saw the boys in red overhaul a 17 point deficit as the hosts led 24 – 7 after two minutes of the second period. The return of Forwards, Allan Purchase, Paul Wilkes and Chris Wood and the introduction of debutant Lock Rob Walton, added much needed power up front.

Coming off the back of two beatings and with Hinckley showing early season form, the players’ fear of a third defeat in a row was understandable. The hesitancy showed in the first half, as ‘Street leaked three soft tries to one, left them an uphill climb in the second.  But climb they did and an upset came agonisingly close when an overlap left saw Wing Mike Rust tackled into touch metres from the Try Line in the last play of this engaging encounter.

‘Street lost Centre Jack Green after only 15 minutes to a nasty eye poke!?, before Hinckley opened the scoring minutes later through their tricky Left Winger taking advantage of slow cross field cover.  7 - 0.  A good 20 metre lineout drive took the visitors close and from the ensuing ruck, full back Nick Allsop sliced through for the first of a hat trick. Danny Richards added the two points.  Play ebbed and flowed and parity reigned for a while, before Hinckley re-took the lead with a break through midfield; as much down to ‘Street’s defence as Hinckley’s endeavour.  14 – 7.  Their lead was increased on 40 minutes following a turnover that produced an identical breach of midfield, to give a Half Time score of 21 – 7

The break allowed ‘Street to review First Half failings and with a declaration of intent all round, the necessary display of spirit ‘fuelled’ an admirable Second Half fight back.  Despite a Ruck infringement Penalty shortly after the re-start (24 – 7), ‘Street shook off inhibitions and began to play as a team.  Captain Nick Thatcher led the revival with a charge down in midfield; collecting the ball and out pacing the Hinckley cover from 35 metres.  Richards added the Conversion.  24 – 14.  Just four minutes later the Backs put together a top draw passage of handling involving in the later stages, Mike Rust, Pete Bicknell, Todd Freemantle and Adam Walsh – twice, to give the latter the touch down.  Richards converted from wide out. 24 – 21.

‘Street, now well up for the fight, lost hard working Blindside Chris Wood to a shoulder injury, but with equally dynamic Flanker Chris Zutic taking over, tempo was maintained.  Following a raking Touch finding Penalty from Fly Half Richards, ‘Street deservedly took the lead with Allsop sprinting in for his second Touchdown on the right, after a disciplined Lineout Drive on the left Touchline. The Conversion attempt was missed, leaving ‘Street with a tenuous two point lead and a quarter of an hour to go. 24 – 26. Hinckley’s No.5 was deemed to have deliberately knocked on preventing a promising visitors attack from progressing and from another long Touch finder from Richards, the Forwards drove the Lineout and spun the ball wide for Nick Allsop to finish and notch his third Try.  Richards was unable to cap a fine all round kicking performance with the all important Conversion. 24 – 31.

Hinckley, somewhat shell-shocked from ‘Street’s comeback put in one final assault which, although repelled time and again by heroic defence close to the line with Ben Dawes, Beau Carney and  Mike Rust to the fore, was eventually rewarded after five solid minutes of siege.  31 – 31 and with three minutes remaining on the clock ‘Street pushed for the winner but Rusty’s last dash for the line just failed to clinch the two extra points for a win.

Belief, trust, familiarity and organisation, is what all teams aspire to. For a new launch the ship has steadied somewhat, but, as everyone knows, one good battle doesn’t win the war!

Street Colts Secure Success. 2012-09-24T14:00:00+00:00 2012-09-24T14:00:00+00:00 http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk/broadstreet-rfc-colts-versus-barkers-butts-rfc-colts-away-sep-2012.html

Rare Colts Win against Old Foes.

Broadstreet-RFC-Colts-LogoBroadstreet Colts’ second fixture of the season was a closely matched affair against a strong Barker’s Butts RFC side at their Pickford Grange Lane ground over in Meriden.  Once again, the under 17’s where well represented for the Street with eight players in the starting line up writes Paul Harcourt.

It’s fair to say this was not the prettiest game of rugby ever played between the two sides, as it mainly took place in both 22’s.  Possession was key, with very little kicking out of hand by either side and some massive tackles going in.

The final score was 24-20 to Broadstreet, which from memory is the first time Street’s Colts have beaten Barker’s Colts for a number of years.

Badgers Prove They Have The Gold Standard. 2012-09-23T20:00:00+00:00 2012-09-23T20:00:00+00:00 http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk/badgers-prove-they-have-the-gold-standard.html

Street's Old Guard ignore their Birth Certificates and prove that Class really is Permanent.

BadgersStandard RFC arrived at the Ivor Preece Field Ground in Rugby Road, ready to take on the 'Street Badgers. Yes, they were short in numbers, but showed no shortage of spirit as they turned up with only twelve players.  Maybe a lesson in not letting people down for Leamington RFC!

Still, Leamington's loss was Standard’s gain as they borrowed six players from the ‘Street’s Third Team to strengthen their cohort, and to be frank, strengthen their team writes John Warne!

The Badgers, 'Street's Fourth Team, had several members of the considerable crowd convinced they had ventured back in time as the names brought back memories of halcyon days - names such as Lydster, Harrison, Foster, Price and Allen. All very well having the names, but could this over 40s club still do the business...?  Fortunately, Rolling Subs helped as they limped on and limped off, but still, mostly, proving that even if the body wasn't willing the brain was. With some lovely interchange play, soft hands, some even softer tackling, the Old Guard provided the spark the rest of the team needed to fire. 'Street eventually romping home comfortable winners.

YP, relishing the task of taking on Lyddy, showed little respect for his childhood hero as he scored two of Standard's tries. This lack of respect did cost him a gentle reminder not to throw the ball away when his Chairman has asked politely for it.

A game played in great spirit, where the only winner was Rugby (despite the substantial score in 'Street's favour).  As one Broadstreet player said, "I don't have too many games left playing on the big pitch, in front of the stand, with my mates around, so I intend to make the most of it".  As that could apply to most of the Fourths, let’s continue, lads, to make this season one of more golden memories....

The next match is a return to League action with a Warwickshire League 5 fixture away versus Rugby St. Andrews IIIs on Saturday 29th September 2012 at 3:00 pm.
