To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.
The annual event is held to recognise the attempted gunpowder plot of which Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby the gunpowder plots ringleader who were attempting to kill the current King James I. Guy Fawkes became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, which has been commemorated in England since 5 November 1605, we haven't been celebrating for that long here at Broadstreet, just a few decades rather than centuries. November the 5th became a day of celebration and the parliament of the day designated each 5 November as a day of thanksgiving for "the joyful day of deliverance", and remained in force until 1859. 5th November has at different times been called Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night, although the present day sees more Fireworks Displays than bonfires.
